Vision

The Diploma in Travel and Tourism is currently in development. Once it has been through its planning and piloting stages it will provide another route into higher education, apprenticeships, other courses or work for those young people interested in a career in the broad range of industries that make up the sector.

The role of Further Education

The Diploma Development Partnership (DDP) expects Further Education colleges to be central to the Gateway 3 application process and the subsequent delivery of the Diploma in Travel and Tourism, building on their experience and expertise in delivering existing related qualifications, staff expertise with industry-related experience, resources and employer engagement. There are strong and established traditions of delivery through former CoVE networks for both Travel and Tourism and Aviation.

  • Existing links and relationships with schools - such as the Increased Flexibility Programme, should be maintained so that the marketing for all the new Diplomas can be sustained and improved
  • Colleges - planning to offer the new Diploma in Travel and Tourism could play a central role in promoting the Diploma. This could be done, for instance, by running 'taster' events as learners make decisions about their futures. They will also have strong links and partnerships with Higher Education institutions, which are crucial in terms of learner progression by identifying appropriate learning pathways onto suitable courses
  • Employer engagement - is crucial in terms of the applied nature of Diplomas, and in developing and sustaining learner interest and enthusiasm. Colleges have a vital role to play in galvanising employer engagement, building on existing contacts and networks to support consortia
