The role of schools in Diploma preparation and delivery

The travel and tourism DDP recognises the vital role that schools will play, along with other key partners, in the successful implementation of the Diplomas. To this end, the DDP Steering Group has had representation from the outset from the SSAT. In our case, we have also been fortunate in having a subject specialist as our representative. Practitioners at 14-19 level were consulted during the early stages of development at events around England, and this input was vital in terms of our Diploma vision and in the development of our Line of Learning Criteria document which is being used by awarding bodies to develop the qualification.

  • Heads and senior managers - During the period of planning, piloting and introduction of Diplomas the senior managers of schools will need to continue to manage the process of change with skill and commitment. Organisations will need to adapt to new areas of learning that they have not previously delivered. There may be new resource development to be considered, and there will be staff development needs to be addressed as new areas of learning open up. Employers and other key partners will need to be part of this on-going process of change
  • Support staff - The transition from the current arrangements for 14 - 19 year-olds to the new Diploma system will also impact on the work of support staff in schools and colleges, and in particular appropriate and informed information, advice and guidance. As the first phase of Diplomas is introduced in September 2008 we hope to be able to collect information about the assistance required by all staff. This website will continue to be updated with news and reports on how to prepare for the Diploma in Travel and Tourism
  • Work experience - All levels of the Diploma require work experience and close links with careers staff, relevant careers/IAG providers, Education Business Partnerships and sector-specific organisations such as Springboard UK, will be crucial
  • Information, Advice and Guidance - The involvement of the careers service relevant to your locality will be vital in ensuring that students have systems of advice and support. If students can obtain the best possible impartial advice about career choices and the range of Diplomas and progression pathways open to them, then we hope that their interest in travel and tourism as an option will be developed
