What's involved?

Diplomas are different to other qualifications. They 'blend' learning in the classroom, with experience in the workplace so that you get a high quality qualification that equips you with the skills and knowledge you need to get ahead in travel and tourism, or even in another profession if you decide it's not for you.

That's the beauty of Diplomas - they are completely flexible. You can choose to study the Diploma on its own, or combine elements of it with GCSEs or A Levels.

Although the content for the Diploma hasn't been confirmed yet, we know it will include topics such as:

  • Destinations and cultures
  • Leadership and management
  • Working in travel and tourism
  • Technology in travel and tourism
  • Travel and tourism and the environment
The Diploma gives you the opportunity to learn in an exciting, creative and enjoyable way, combining class work with hands-on experience

When can I start?

The Diploma in Travel and Tourism will be available in some schools and colleges from September 2010, and will be available throughout England from September 2013.

You can start studying this Diploma as early as 14 year old (years 10-11) at either Foundation or Higher levels and you can carry on right up to the age of 19 at Advanced level. The Advanced is equivalent to 3.5 A Levels; this means this qualification will allow you to go to university should you wish to. It will give you the essential knowledge and personal skills that you will need for college, university or work and help you make choices about what career you want to follow.
