The Diploma in Travel and Tourism is an exciting new qualification

It will be available in some schools and colleges in England from September 2010, and will be available throughout England from 2013. The Diploma is aimed at 14-19 year olds, and has been designed in collaboration with employers, trade and professional bodies, higher education institutions, colleges and other partners. This is to make sure that it is widely recognised and valued both by employers and further and higher education institutions as a highly valuable combination of skills, knowledge and attitudes.

Here are some of the industry and education organisations that we have collaborated with:

  • Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA)
  • Institute of Travel and Tourism (ITT)
  • Thomas Cook
  • Shearings Holidays
  • TUI UK
  • Superbreak
  • Hoseasons
  • LEGOLAND Windsor
  • BA London Eye
  • London Underground
  • Association of Tourism in Higher Education
  • Higher Education Academy

This exciting qualification will provide learners with new and challenging opportunities to develop their skills through different styles of learning in different settings, often outside of the classroom in a more adult environment.

What levels are there?

The Diploma has been designed for learners to study it alongside GCSEs and A Levels, and is available at three different levels;

  • Foundation Level is the equivalent to 5 GCSEs at grades D to G
  • Higher Level is the equivalent to 7 GCSEs at grades A* to C
  • Advanced Level is the equivalent to 3.5 A levels
The Diploma will help your son or daughter develop work-relevant skills, including functional skills in English, maths and ICT, in a creative and enjoyable way

How will it develop your child?

The Diploma will give learners first-hand experience of the world of work, providing them with the skills, knowledge and understanding they will need for further or higher education as well as progression into employment

Not only will it help students make better choices about the type of learning that best suits them, it will also provide them with increased confidence in their personal, learning and thinking skills.

Essentially it will provide learners with an informed choice on what's the right option for them, whether it is employment, further education or university; it will equip them with the skills that employers are looking for, as well as a qualification that is valued by universities, enabling learners to progress on a pathway of their choice.
